Timeline: Taken from the end of the manga when the shinigami and shikigami are investigating the mysterious wormholes that are showing up in Gensokai and causing the real world and it to be linked.

Appearance: Byakko while in tiger form can look like a normal white tiger to a tiger as big as a building. While in human form he has spikey white hair and a long tiger tail.

Personality: Byakko is your typical crazy tiger god…ok so not your typical. He is usually hyper and happy and likes to interact with others. He’s usually the first one to greet new people, even if it involves him glomping them at times. However, when it comes to his godly duties he gets serious and down to business. Don’t underestimate this playful kitty as he has claws and can use them when needed.

History: Yami no Matsuei is a story surrounding a group of shinigami or death gods that were once human but due to the events in their life have been “sentenced” to serve as shinigami investigating odd deaths around Japan. There are multiple branches of shinigami but Yami mainly focuses around the Second Division who’s duty is to look over the area of Kyushu. Tsuzuki Asato is the main character that most of the story revolves around along with his partner (ok third partner as he has a habit of driving them away) Hisoka Kurosaki. Tsuzuki is the branches oldest shinigami with over seventy years of experience and will be working for seventy years more due to his amazing ability to destroy things on accident. This is shown the best when he meets his rival during a yearly contest the branches hold named Terazuma. They end up fighting, Tsuzuki with the use of his shikigami (or the gods of Chinese legends such as Sohryuu and Byakko) and Terazuma in his Shikigami form. Unfortunately during the fight they destroy the library that holds all the records of the cases they’ve been on much to the gushoshen brother’s (two beings that look like chickens) distress.
Life would have continued like this at the branch if a doctor by the name of Kazutaka Muraki hadn’t come onto the scene. He seems to have a connection with both Tsuzuki and Hisoka’s past before they died. We find out that Muraki is the reason that Hisoka died and placed a curse on him that follows him even into death so that he will forever be connected to him. Muraki wasn’t directly connected to Tsuzuki but Muraki’s grandfather was. Through his grandfathers notes he discovered that Tsuzuki had a remarkable healing ability and that he was also able to live for years without eating, or drinking. This perked Muraki’s interest in the fact that he wanted to use Tsuzuki’s body to bring his dead half brother Saki back to life so that he may take his revenge by killing him for killing his parents. Muraki has also been the cause of all the odd and mysterious deaths that the Kyushu branch has been investigating. Through their investigations Tsuzuki and Hisoka are forced to face Muraki over and over. By the end they are finally able to put an end to Muraki’s plans by destroying his lab where Saki’s head is kept along with Muraki himself, or so they thought. Muraki’s presence is still felt.

The shikigami up until this time play a small roll in the manga as we only see Suzaku, Sohryuu, Byakko and Touda. In all there are twelve gods that reside in the Gensokai or imaginary world that the shinigami access through the internet. In this world there are four gates that allow you to access it. Each gate also belongs to a different god, the West Gate to Byakko, South Gate to Suzaku, East Gate to Sohryuu who is also the Emperor of the Gensokai, and Genbu is the guardian of the North gate. When Hisoka enters Gensokai he is greeted by an overly happy and hyper Byakko who all but tackles him. Byakko has heard a lot about Hisoka through his master Tsuzuki, who has managed to tame all but one of the twelve gods, and proceeds to show Hisoka around Gensokai, introducing him to the other Shikigami. Byakko uses both forms as he shows Hisoka around and Hisoka questions him on why his attitude and voice changes from Human form and tiger form. Byakko doesn’t exactly answer it but explains that he can be serious at times.
Hisoka decides to go looking for the only shikigami that Tsuzuki wasn’t ever able to tame, Kurikara, because he believes that if he can tame the strongest shiki he will be able to on equal levels with Tsuzuki. Unfortunately, due to this decision he nearly gets killed and Koujiro, the tengue that came to his rescue along with his brother Koutoro is killed. Byakko and the rest of the Shiki along with Tsuzuki are frantically looking for Hisoka as Sohryuu goes to confront Kurikara himself. The confrontation ends up in Sohryuu getting information on Hisoka’s whereabouts but stops there.

Meanwhile there have been tears that have been opening up in the Gensokai and the Shiki’s have not discovered its source. However they soon find out its related to the “Emperor” someone other than Sohryuu. We find out later that Kijin is this Emperor and has been causing all the problems trying to merge the Meifu or real world with the Gensokai. (stopping here as the manga stops there and does not go any further)

Powers:
Byakko is the god of the West gate of the Gensokai. He can control the wind as well as produce huge balls of energy and shoot them at people. He can also change into his tiger form at will and make it any size. Being a god he can also heal himself.

Power Limits: He will not have the ability to turn into his tiger form and will therefore be stuck in his human form. If it’s allowed I’ll have it where he can somewhat control the wind but nothing strong and possibly create small balls of energy. The balls of energy will only be able to be used three times each night and it drains him of energy. His healing factor will also be limited to where it would take a day or two to heal something rather than a few minutes.

Crime: Traitor against the Gensokai and the other gods. He is being blamed for the wormholes that have been appearing threatening to break the barrier between the real world and the Gensokai.
